50 Movies I Should See

Alright, this blog is going to be taking a break next week so I can allocate some time for studying the atrocities that is Shakespeare (apologies Shakespeare fans). Now, lately, I've been watching a lot of movies I've heard good things about but had never seen before, like Ben-Hur [pretty damn good] and Across the Universe [which was rubbish], and want to continue that.

Therefore, that brings us to this: I would like whoever reads this blog to recommend to me 50 movies that I absolutely should see.

Now keep in mind, I am not saying that I want 50 "classics" that I haven't seen nor do I want the typical answers like Casablanca or Citizen Kane. Hit me up with a wide range of flicks - foreign films, cult classics, shitty films, even musicals. I want to expand my viewing horizon, ladies and gents. For example, if it wasn't for Nick's 60 Weeks 60 Movies feature I wouldn't have seen the awesomeness that is The Good, The Bad, and the Weird. If need be, sure, throw a classic I really should see my way, but I sort of want to avoid them.

Below I will have a updated list with all the titles recommended to me.

1. Dark City
2. The Station Agent
3. Network
4. City of God
5. Woman in the Dunes
6. Blow
7. The Special Relationship
8. Sanjuro

Well if you liked The Good, The Bad and The Weird, I would recommend Sukiyaki Western Django, a film I watched recently which is basically a Japanese Spaghetti Western, I'll probably be posting a review soon...

Anyway, I would also recommend Boon Jong Ho's films, The Host, Memories of Murder and Mother, all very good.

I can't think of much right now, it depends on what kind of films you're looking for, for English films I'd recommend The Full Monty, Looking For Eric... For French, I'd recommend The Mesrine films and A Prophet.
For German, some of Herzog's and Wender's films.
Also, The Proposition, Dead Man's Shoes, The Wind That Shakes The Barley should make for some interesting viewing, and for comedy, well I don't watch much but I'll just recommend Woody Allen's earlier films...

Hope that helps, this was just of the top of my head and I tried to keep it to pretty recent and well known films so they're not to hard to find.

Keep 'em coming folks!

Weird, foreign, musical, drama, obscure, cult classic, what have you. Throw 'em my way!

And duh Fletch, of COURSE each and every one of y'all was to supply 50 flicks for consideration. That way I'd have plenty of titles to select. :)

Naw, my bad. Darn typin' too fast!

LIST UPDATED: 04/10/11

Jack - Thank you major loads for your contributions, mate! Haven't heard of some of those, and will definitely be checking 'em out.

Distilled - Thanks for some ideas. When you mean ZATOICHI, you mean the older franchise spawning 20+ flicks or the more recent flick? I will definitely be checking out most of those. Excited for DUNE.

Mrs. Thuro's Mom - Dunno if it's bad on me as a film geek, but there were only four films you listed I actually knew. Blimey. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Tamara - Been curious about THE FALL, and your recommendation is definitely making me excited to see it. Major amounts of thanks. And you're the second person suggesting a Miyazaki movie. Bugger, guess I'm gonna have to take the plunge (anime not being my thing, really). Also the first person I think who would ever recommend OBSESSED! haha.

Thank you all for your suggestions! Way bigger turn-out than I had expected, frankly.

I will be starting my 50 Film Movie watch probably in June, as I intend to dedicate May to continuing and finishing up my FANTASTIC DINOSAURS project. Again, major thanks ladies and gents!
